Labeling Guide

Principal Display Panel

Food and beverage products must have a principal display panel (PDP). On the PDP, along with your brand name, you’ll need to provide nutrition information like the net quantity of contents and a statement of identity (the common name of the food or beverage).

Nutritional Facts Label

The nutritional facts label must include the serving size and the number of servings per container, as well as an ingredient list. You must include daily values for the following:

  • Added sugar
  • Total sugars
  • Total fat (including the type of fat)
  • Cholesterol
  • Sodium
  • Total carbohydrates
  • Dietary fibers
  • Protein
  • Vitamin D
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Potassium

*Other vitamins and minerals may be included voluntarily on the nutrition facts panel.

Food Allergen Labeling

You must also provide common food allergen labeling for the following food groups:

  • Milk
  • Egg
  • Fish
  • Crustacean shellfish
  • Tree nuts
  • Wheat
  • Peanuts
  • Soybeans

There are exemptions for the allergen information panel if you sell raw agricultural products like fresh fruits and vegetables.

Beverage and food label requirements can be hard for both large and small business manufacturers to navigate – they’re constantly evolving and can vary if you’re selling dietary supplements, energy drinks, gluten-free products, or if your product makes any kind of health claim.

*Any label claims about health benefits or nutrient content claims need to be verified and approved by the FDA.
